Schmalschlägerstraße — A Street in the Bavarian Alps
The only street in all of Germany bearing the Schmalschläger name runs through the Karlstein district of Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria. Built in 1906–1907 by Johann Schmalschläger , a master builder originally from Börlinghausen in the Oberbergischer Kreis, the municipality honored him by naming the 1.14 km mountain road after him — making it the only street in the city named after its builder. A commemorative marble plaque, now a protected monument, still marks the achievement.
The street climbs nearly 100 meters through an area of remarkable archaeological and historical significance, leading to the medieval Karlstein Castle ruins and the St. Pankraz pilgrimage church high above the valley.
